2011 Swiss & Italian Festival poster image artist Michael Parker presents an exhibition of his new works ‘Happy People’ including Festa core image ‘Sunday Drive’.
Michael Parker Exhibition

2011 Swiss & Italian Festival poster image artist Michael Parker presents an exhibition of his new works ‘Happy People’ including Festa core image ‘Sunday Drive’. ‘Sunday Drive’ is part of a series of new original works which will be on display during the Festa. There will also be limited edition framed prints reproduced from this piece available for purchase at the exhibition.
“I began this painting with the inspiration of Hepburn Springs and Daylesford in mind… the memory of the time my partner Linda and I decided to move here from the city, and all the Sunday drives we and others have taken coming to this beautiful town to experience all the jewels the region has to offer.
This painting depicts the drive from Melbourne to Daylesford and Hepburn Springs, the beautiful lakes here, the orchestra of birds, and the happy, friendly people that live here, who are always so warm and welcoming.”
Michael Parker was born in Melbourne in 1968, and was surrounded by artistic creativity, sitting by his mother’s side as she painted. With the aroma of linseed oil in the air, it wasn’t long before he picked up a brush. It was from here that Michael began his journey into the exciting world of art. Painting various subjects from portraits to abstracts, he spent many years in Europe, observing the techniques and styles of the masters. Now, with some 26 years behind him, Michael feels at ease painting in many different styles, using the wonder of nature’s many colours as his theme.

Ghost Tours! at The Convent

The Convent is home to some of Daylesford’s oldest history. Once a castle for the gold commissioner, then home to Nuns and also a boarding school. More than 140 years of history are impregnated in the walls of this magnificent 19th century mansion. Walk with us as we explore The Convent by night and hear the tales of a bygone era - and what tales it has to tell! Tread in the paths of the Nuns who lived here for more than 80 years, some of whom still remain behind overseeing their home. As the mist rolls over The Convent, we begin our lamp lit journey into the world of the unknown, of those who are still earthbound.

OPENING WEEKEND BALL / BALLO

LA DOLCE VITA!
Welcome to the 2011 Swiss & Italian Festa! Swing, boogie, old time dancing, crooning in traditional style! Dress up 'La Dolce Vita' (a sweet and beautiful life) and be fabulous! Polish your dancing shoes and prepare to be laid out for an evening of dancing and frivolity with the legendary Shuffle Club and Julie O’Hara… all this in the salubrious surrounds of the recently reopened historic Palais Ballroom. For decades The Palais was known as a dance hall, and we hope to recreate that same ‘certain kind of magic’ as we celebrate Opening Weekend of the Swiss & Italian Festa with the theme ‘La Dolce Vita’.
The Shuffle Club are best described as a hot blend of jazz, swing, blues, and boogie. They possess a raw energy and enthusiasm – the kind of energy that will bring you to your feet and onto the dance floor before you even quite know what is happening. Performing classics by Louis Prima, Dean Martin and Count Basie to name a few. Favorites on the Festival circuit from Mexico to Melbourne, Carlton to the Caribbean and now gracing us with their presence in Hepburn Springs. Following on from the band will be DJ Mr Nicely taking you through to the wee hours.
NB: Unfortunately Julie O'Hara will no longer be performing at this event. Julie will be replaced by Kelsey James.

A TRIBUTE TO DAME NELLIE MELBA
NELLIE IN HER OWN WRITE

This concert tells the extraordinary tale of the life of the great Australian soprano, Dame Nellie Melba. The first lady of Covent Garden, Dame Nellie Melba hailed from rural origins in Victoria. "Nellie in Her Own Write" was first presented at Government House this year to much acclaim. It is based on Nellie's own writings in her autobiography "Melodies and Memories", as adapted by Stephen McIntyre - who also narrates the show. The scholarship recipients of the Melba Opera Trust illustrate the narrative with famous arias that Dame Nellie was known for. The presentation also connects with the 150th Anniversary of the Italian Constitution this year. The concert will include famous arias from Puccini, Verdi and another prominent Italian composer, Paolo Tosti, who wrote beautiful songs for Dame Nellie that achieved fame all over the world. This concert will be held in the magnificent and intimate surrounds of The Convent Chapel.

THE PALAIS JAZZ WEEKENDER

Leigh Barker and The New Sheiks
Double bassist Leigh Barker is touring Australia this spring with his band The New Sheiks. In May 2011 Leigh was awarded the Australian Jazz Bell Award for Best Traditional Jazz Album, which inspired Leigh to hit the road with the six-piece band from the CD of the same name. Barker has toured Australia extensively. In 2010 he was asked to be the support act for jazz superstar Branford Marsalis, which culminated with Leigh performing an encore with Branford at the Sydney Opera House. He has been calling his group The New Sheiks since 2009, referencing a trio formed in 2005 that trumpeter Eamon McNelis affectionately referred to as The Sheiks and also the 1930s blues band the Mississippi Sheiks.

A Tribute to Ennio Morricone
Once Upon A Time In... A Tribute to Ennio Morricone
Ennio Morricone is one of the most famous, prolific, influential and respected film composers of all time. We celebrate the varied work of Morricone, whose compositions have appeared in a range of classic films including Cinema Paradiso*, The Mission and Sergio Leone's classic Spaghetti Western Trilogy: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, A Fistful of Dollars and Once Up A Time In The West. The Swiss and Italian Festa presents an evening of great music that is on par with the great film directors that Morricone has worked with.
Morricone created set pieces that were as powerful musically as visually, placing music at the same level with the image, rather than subordinating it. With his peerless versatility and productivity, trumpeter, Gianni Marinucci has assembled the finest musicians in Australia, including the legendary Tony Gould on piano (2010 Bell Award Hall of Fame inductee), Imogen Manins - cello, Dan Gordon - bass & tuba and Ronny Ferella - drums, to pay homage to this great composer.

Lavandula La Primavera, a Swiss Italian Celebration

You can explore the Swiss Italian theme through a visit to the 1860s farmhouse, enjoy the joyful music of Marcello and Paulina, watch our local mime troupe or the dancing of Sicilia Bella, listen to the singing of the U3A trio or to Fay Thomson's stories. In the cellar you can watch Boyd Thompson's slides of Ticino.
Of course La Trattoria will have spring foods for lunch from the wood oven and from the kitchen, The Vintage Baker is bringing biscotti, and Lina and Tony Siciliano will showcase their wines, olives and olive oil...
Graeme and Bill will have gorgeous chooks and fresh eggs for sale.
Gary Thomas, Spade to Blade, will demonstrate sausage-making
Jill Taylor will demonstrate basket weaving, using Lavandula's basket willows and lavender.
Maldon Petanque will stage a tournament, but you must register by 9am if you want to field a team - or join one!
Under colourful fluttering flags from Biasca, you will enjoy la primavera festa by simply lolling on the grass, watching the farm animals and the little chicks on the lake, or walking in a beautiful garden taking time to notice the fresh growth of spring or to hear the small birds bustling through the nesting season.
Bring a rug, relax and breathe in the indescribable freshness of spring country air.

Stafford Garden
Leading horticulturist Lisa Stafford designed this garden with the brief to create a low maintenance and water wise environment, with year round colour. The basis of the design is a silver birch grove, under planted with bulbs and perennials for a succession of colour displays. Over 130 roses are included in a scheme that includes mass plantings of hellebores, sedum and veronica, plus many rare and unusual trees and shrubs. The front garden with its formal design provides an elegant approach to the entrance and side gardens.

The Villa Parma garden, based on the Italian gardens of the 17th, 18th, 19th centuries.
Villa Parma
The Villa Parma garden, based on the Italian gardens of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries is a series of interconnected 'rooms' offering different areas to seek solitude and clear one's mind, whilst wandering through controlled spaces dominated by shades of green. When the original owner and founder of Villa Parma, Mr Fabrizzio Crippa constructed his imposing home in 1864, he also established an equally striking garden. Crippa masterfully interspersed the 20 acres of grapevines with fruit, vegetable and tobacco and a vine walk. Although the vines are no longer present, today the aromatic bay trees, lilacs, rose and herb gardens, topiaries, fig and olive trees continue to flourish - providing an enchanting reminder of its bygone glory. Alternative water sources are in use.

Di Lyttleton & Jeff Bain
Planning to relocate from Wheatsheaf to Daylesford, a friend advised “Don’t buy the house, buy the garden, because you can’t grow hugely established trees in one lifetime.” So we bought a little fibro house on a big block with a fabulous garden. However, a few years later when we had the house pulled down and replaced by a big house we had almost demolished the garden. We were left with a few large trees – cedar and claret ashes and a big blackwood and a severely sloping block. Priorities were a petanque pitch that required flat ground, and a stone wall to prevent the house next door sliding into ours. Consequently there were months of big machinery carrying out major works resulting in a barren garden that required a fair amount of planting in clay soil, and much trial and error. It is still a work in progress but is now fairly well “re” established.

Barcaldine Country House
In the beginning Barcaldine Country House was a potato farm, with its rich volcanic soil that produced excellent yields of crop. As time went by and the property sold, it became a passionate mission to transform the potato paddocks into a breath-taking maze of cyprus and rose garden. Manchurian pears and golden laburnum decorate entrances to garden rooms.
Agapanthus, English box and silver birches are also skillfully incorporated in this charming garden. An established vineyard is positioned on the north side of this majestic setting with an olive grove alongside. Barcaldine Country House is truly a unique property in this region that everyone should experience.

FESTA CLOSING NIGHT PARTY with THE AUTOCRATS AND DJ

Join in the celebrations after the Festa Fireworks Finale as we thank the local community for their support of the 2011 Festa. Enjoy an informal drink, some food and perhaps a bit of a dance as we bring the Festa to an end. Music on the night will be provided by Steve Lane and the Autocrats, followed by a DJ set from local DJ St Mel.
If superbly-crafted indie pop-rock and great songwriting is your thing, then look no further than Steve Lane and The Autocrats…
Rapidly gathering a reputation as a live act not to be missed, you couldn’t ask for a band with a better music pedigree. With Augie March’s rhythm section, and seasoned musos (who have played with some great Australian songwriters including Paul Kelly and Maurice Frawley) Steve has handpicked his own dream band to interpret songs that reflect the conflicted nature of everyday life, from memory and longing to the “Aha!” moments and lingering melancholy.
